A STUDY OF THE RELEVANCE OF A PUBLIC RELATIONS UNIT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF BENIN TEACHING HOSPITAL

The world over, public relations has been acknowledged as having a significant role to play in any human organisation. Although there appears to be misconceptions about it’s relevance in public health institutions. It is against this backdrop that this study sought to thoroughly examine the relevance of public relations units in the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City. To make for better understanding of the topic under focus, the study utilized the public sphere theory as its theoretical underpin. The study employed the cross-sectional research design in order to ensure specificity and orderliness in the process of research analysis. Ninety-two questionnaires were self-administered to respondents in the stay area. The study reveals that the public has a positive attitude towards the effectiveness of the public relations unit in UBTH and that the unit plays a significant role in the realization of UBTH organisational goals. It was recommended that the management of UBTH should continue to give the public relations unit the needed and required support to succeed.
