RE-DEFINING MASCULINITIES: NEW MODELS AND STRUCTURES OF POWER IN CONTEMPORARY HOMES

The roles of men in the family and society have been viewed as natural and ungendered. This has led to the overlooking, howbeit critically, of men and men related issues. In addition, recent clamouring by women’s movements for equal rights has opened way to a constant challenge of traditional male roles. Thus, the emergence of new models and structures of power for men as the roles that make them leaders in the home are being stripped away. This loss of true manhood coupled with social expectations and pressure to be a real man has especially with the covid-19 pandemic contributed to the global rise to discourse on new men/fathers. This view coupled with a dearth of studies on men has made a critical study of men inevitable. The paper investigates the place of the new man in the home; the forms of crisis that arises considering their shift in breadwinning roles. It also examines why men grieves erupt in violence and violent acts against women, children and other men. The paper adopts the qualitative method of data gathering with respondents purposively selected from areas with different socio– economic status in Ibadan metropolis, Nigeria. This study identified the different ways men manage contemporary challenges to their traditional roles. The paper concludes that there is a sort of transformation from the traditional roles of men in the society which is deeply enshrined in the different cultures to the advancement of the “new men” “new fathers” in most contemporary homes as a result of a lot of feminist fights and struggles for gender equality.
