EFFECTIVENESS OF EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMME IN CHILDREN CORRECTIONAL CENTRE, UGBEKUN, BENIN CITY, EDO STATE, NIGERIA

Essentially, assessing the effectiveness of educational programme in Children Correctional Centre at Ugbekun in Benin City was the focus. The study employed the social learning theory as the theoretical framework while, the qualitative research method was adopted. Appropriate respondents were selected using purposive sampling method. Data were collected from concerned participants via in-depth interviews and focus group discussion (FGD). The sample size of the study was thirty (30). It was shown that effective educational programme causes about positive behavioural changes in juvenile delinquents’ lives and enhance their reintegration into the society. Also, the findings revealed that recidivism is reduced by effective educational programme and not by mere incarceration. However, the study revealed that educational programme in Children Correctional Centre at Ugbekun in Benin City has difficulties in reforming the juveniles effectively because of the absence of qualified teachers and instructional materials. Finally, the study recommended recruitment of trained personnel; training and retraining of correctional officials on rehabilitation services; supply of instructional materials and provision of opportunities for the children at the correctional centre to write certificate examinations such as Primary School Leaving Certificate examination. This abstract is justified in the view of the alarming rate of recidivism in Edo State, and Nigeria in general; the rate at which juveniles become hardened after being released from children correctional centre and the findings in this study shall help recommend solutions to the problems associated with rehabilitation of children who are in conflict with the law.
