THE CONTEMPORARY ETIOLOGY OF CRIME IN NIGERIA: A CASE OF NIGER DELTA REGION

History as showed that most crime managers believes that in curbing the ever increasing crimes and criminalities in our society Nigeria, Niger Delta in particular requires increase budgetary allocation to the police and other security Agencies without recourse for Provision of soft security in which solid security is laid. In the Niger Delta, one of Nigeria’s most resource-rich regions faces a range of intertwined social, economic, and political difficulties, which have positioned it as a significant hotspot for criminal activities in the country. Despite its wealth derived from oil, the region experiences high levels of poverty, widespread un-employment, and ineffective governance, which contribute to various crimes such as militancy, oil theft, kidnapping, armed robbery, and civil unrest. This article explores the modern-day causes of crime in the Niger Delta, highlighting the impact of socio-economic challenges like poverty and unemployment, along with the role of political corruption, environmental damage, and entrenched social inequalities. By examining these underlying factors, the study offers valuable insights into how to addressing these root causes can help reduce and prevent crime, ultimately fostering long-term peace and sustainable development in the region. It is all believe that reduction crimes in Society depends on the ability of the criminal Justice system in bringing criminals to book, (Farotimi, 2024), (Uwaise, 2004). Finding derived from this study using (Igbinovia 2003), Perpetuity theory of crime causation reveals that all patterns of behavior including crime are learnt through imitation, identification, reinforcement and association in a given environment. The findings further exposed that crime is a factor of various causes such as Poverty, unemployment, economic hardship, deprivation, exploitation, environmental degradation, inequality and injustice, acceptance of criminals and their lost, lack of Social investment and development of citizens, poor upbringing and moral, poor leadership etc. Based on finding it was recommended that there should be a well planned Social defense for Citizens particularity destitute equal Opportunities for citizens, provision of job opportunities to enhance socio-economic states of the citizen amongst others would reduce crime in Nigeria.
